Objective To establish animal modes for retinal photic injury and observe the protective effect of heme enzyme-1 (HO-1) in retinal photic injury. Methods Rats were divided into three groups, one were illuminated by green fluorescent light as light group, the second group were given hemin through intraperitoneal injection at 30min before light exposure, the third group were normal rats for control. The expression of HO-1 by immunohistochemical staining were observed in retinal tissue, as well as the apoptosis rate of retinal cells was detected by the flow cytometry. Results Compared to the normal group, the level of HO-1 increased in light group (p<0.05), on the 1st day after light-exposure, the expression of HO-1 reached the peak at 5 days after light-exposure and dropped at 7 days furthermore. The change of apoptosis rate of retinal cells follow above pattern. In induced group the expression of HO-1 was increased significantly, and the level of expression increased on every time point (Id,3d,5d,7d), however, the apoptosis rate of retinal cells declined compared with light group (p<0.05), and increased than normal group. Conclusion The expression of HO-1 play a protective role in retinal photic injury, and its level of expression was induced by its antileptic.
