Objective:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 2% minocycline ointment or gel for chronic adult periodontitis. Methods:Several electronic databases(PubMed, The Cochrane library, Embase, CBM,CNKI,VIP)were searched. Five Chinese journals were hand searched for possible missing articles. Randomized controlled trials(RCTs) that evaluate the efficacy of 2% minocycline ointment or gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) alone or with a placebo were considered. The quality of included studies were evaluated according to Cochrane Reviewer's Handbook 4.2.6 and meta-analysis were performed by using RevMan 5.0.0 software. Results:Six RCTs including 336 patients were identified. The results of our meta-analysis showed a significant decrease on Probing depth(PD) and attachment loss(AL) compared with control group(P<0.05) after 3 months of treatment. Whereas the decrease on PD and AL didn't show statistical significant changes(P>0.05) after 12 months of treatment.Conclusions:2% minocycline ointment or gel can get more decrease of PD and AL after SRP, but the long-term efficacy remains to be further observation. More RCTs are required to evaluate the short and long term efficacy and safety of 2% minocycline ointment or gel for chronic adult periodontitis.
