Objective:To investigate the effect of cellular phone use and risk of epithelial parotid gland tumours. Methods:670 participants with epithelial parotid gland tumours treated in our hospital from January 1993 to March 2010 were selected as case group, and 2072 participants were randomly selected from non-salivary-gland-tumor patients admitted in oral and maxillofacial surgery department from January 1993 to March 2010 as control group. the relationship of their cellular phone use with risk of epithelial parotid gland tumours was analyzed with logistic analysis. Result:Risk of epithelial parotid gland benign tumor(odds ration [OR]=0.494,95% confidence interval [CI]=0.391-0.625) and parotid gland pleomorphic adenoma(odds ration [OR]=0.498,95% confidence interval [CI]=0.369-0.673) is not raised as a result of cellular phone exposure. Early beginning(>10 years) and long-term use(>10 years) can cause a higher risk of epithelial parotid gland benign tumours, pleomorphic adenoma, epithelial parotid gland malignancies, mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Average intensity of use(>2.5h)is associated with higher risk of epithelial parotid gland benign tumours(odds ration [OR]=5.014,95% confidence interval [CI]=1.920-13.092), pleomorphic adenoma(odds ration [OR]=8.294,95% confidence interval [CI]=3.144-21.880), epithelial parotid gland malignancies(odds ration [OR]=6.782,95% confidence interval [CI]=1.774-25.928),mucoepidermoid carcinoma(odds ration [OR]=11.613,95% confidence interval [CI]=2.123-63.524). Cumulative duration of calls(1351-4320h) is associated with higher risk of epithelial parotid gland benign tumours (odds ration [OR]=12.234,95% confidence interval [CI]= 4.823-31.032).Cumulative duration of calls(>4320h) can raise the risk of pleomorphic adenoma (odds ration [OR]=5.826,95% confidence interval [CI]=5.196-6.455),epithelial parotid gland malignancies (odds ration [OR]=2.662,95% confidence interval [CI]=1.795-3.528)Conclusion:Generally, cellular phone use is not associated with higher risk of epithelial parotid gland tumours. Yet, long term use(over 10 years) is relevent with higher risk of epithelial parotid gland tumours...
