ObjeetiveTo summarize the experience of Single-nostril transsphenoidal microsurgery for Huge pituitary adenomasMethodsA total of 32 patients with huge pituitary adenomas were treated with Single-nostril transsphenoidal microsurgery from 2007 to 2009ResultsNo surgery-related deaths were observed. Postoperative MRI examination srevealed a gross total resection (>95%) was achieved in 24 patients(75%), a subtotal resection(>85%) in 6 patients(18.75%) and a partial resection(<50%) in 2 (6.25%). Follow-up observations were carried out for 1-36 months (mean,14 months) in 32 patients. Except 1 patient had a Secondary hemorrhage and underwent an additional surgery then in the coma, the rest of 31 patients had recovered uneventfully.ConclusionsSingle-nostril transsphenoidal microsurgery safe and effective option for the treatment of huge pituitary adenomas. Postoperative additional radiotherapy is necessary for preventing recurrence.
