Dialysis (hemodialysis, HD) is the end-stage renal disease (end stage renal disease, ESRD) most applications of blood purification methods. With the prevalence of ESRD worldwide to fast-growing, HD has also increased the number of patients. HD patients and mental illness under the double pressure, prone to negative psychological and even mental illness. Depression (Depression) is the most common mental illness in the HD patients. The incidence of depression up to 29.3 ~ 100% of patients with HD, depression lead to impaired social function, 66% of patients were with depression in all suicide deaths, thus, causing serious socio-economic problems. Currently, the diagnosis of depression according to clinical past history mostly, patients with subjective symptoms related to the formulation and assessment of such scale is still a lack of quantitative indicators helpful in the diagnosis. Objective: To research hemodialysis(HD) patients with depression of serum C-reactive protein (C-reactive protein, CRP) levels, to explore the diagnostic value of serum CRP in HD patients with depression. Methods: Selected 65 patients with HD in China-Japan union hospital of Jilin university from December 2008 to December 2009 with HD, as the HD group, in which 35 cases were male and 30 cases were female, aged 18 to 75 years, mean (43.83±13.31) years; selected 64 patients with healthy kidneys and no history of mental illness, as the normal control group, in which 33 cases were male and 31 cases were female, aged 18 to 75 years, mean (48.54±16.14) years. American Psychiatric Association in 1990 with the latest amendments to the U.S. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders 4th edition (DSM-Ⅳ) and ZUNG's self-rating depression scale(SDS) for the diagnosis and evaluation of depression. According to the degree of depression, HD group was divided into three subgroups:HD patients with moderate-severe depression (Group A), HD patients with mild depression (Group B), HD patients without depression ( Group C). To determinate serum CRP of 139 cases in HD group and the control group. SPSS17.0 statistical software was used for data analysis, the serum CRP levels of three subgroups patients was compared, to study the serum CRP levels of the three subgroups patients , to further explore the diagnostic value of serum CRP in HD patients with depression. Results: (1) The morbidity of HD patients with depression was 36.9%, which is higher prevalence of depression significantly, the difference was significant stati- stically (P<0.05). (2) The high risk age of depression in HD group and the control group were 40 to 50 years old. (3) The women suffered from depression are more susceptible than men in HD patients, the ratio of the male to female is about 1:1.95. (4) The serum CRP in HD with moderate-severe depressive patients (Group A) and HD with mild depression patients (Group B) were significantly higher than HD patients without depression's (Group C), the difference was significant statistically (P<0.05) ; Serum CRP in patients with depression compared with healthy people, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05); HD group of patients with depression higher serum CRP, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05).Conclusion:1. HD patients tend to combine with depression. 2. The high risk age of depression in HD group and the control group were 40 to 50 years old. 3. The women suffered from depression are more susceptible than men in HD patients. 4. In HD patients, serum CRP may be cognized as the basis for the diagnosis of depression.
