OBJECTIVE:A -381 bp T/C polymorphism located in the promoter region of brain natriuretic peptide(BNP) gene was found to be associated with plasma concentration of BNP.However, its association with essential hypertension remained unclear. The aim of this study was designed to explore this association in Chinese population.METHODS:138 essential hypertensive patient(male 87 and female 51,age 49.28±11.19 y,and body mass index 24.12±1.96kg/ m~2) and 141 normal controls(male 95 and female 46,age 48.17±12.66 y,and body mass index23.94±2.42kg/m~2)were genotyped by polymerase chain reactionrestriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP).Phenotypic measuremerits include blood pressure, blood glucose, serum triglyceides, serum total high-density lipoprotein(HDL) and low- density lipoprotein(LDL).RESULTS:The frequencies of TC and CC genotypes(0.304) and C allele (0.178) were significantly(P=0.042 and 0.016) higher in hypertensive patients than normal controls(0.199 and 0.106).Furthermore,C allele carriers, compared with TT subject, had lower concentrations of blood glucose in hypertensive patients(P=0.045)CONCLUSION:The brain natriuretic peptide T-381C polymorphism might correlate with genetic susceptibility to essential hypertension in Chinese. The risk of essential hypertension was increased in the persons carrying allele C or genotype TC and CC.
