ObjectiveThe mutinous gastric carcinoma was characterized with mucus secretion, which mainly caused the tumor high capability of invation. It was conformed that mucin with different characteristics cause kinds of biological behaviour. So we performed this study to analyse the difference of biological behaviour and prognosis between the subgroups.MethodsWe studied 143 patients with mutinous gastric carcinoma who underwent excision at No.1 Hospital of China Medical University from 1981 to 2006.Resected specimens had been fixed in 10%formalin,embedded in paraffin, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.Histopathologic examination was carried out.5 random visual fields was choose for each slice. The subgroup for each slice was decided by the prevalent kind of mucin pool,A with the mucin pools containing signet-ring cells,B with the limpid mucin pools lined by adenocarcinomatous epithelium. The statistic analysis was performed to show the difference of gender, age, main carcinoma location, macropathology classification, growth pattern,TNM staging, the depth of infiltration, range of resection, degree of radical cure, live time and prognosis.Results52 patients were classified as A subgroup and 52 as B subgroup. The Clinicopathologic data were obtained from the data base, including age, gender and follow up information. There was no significant difference between the subgroup A and B,so was the carcinoma location, macropathology classification, growth pattern,TNM staging, the depth of infiltration, range of resection, degree of radical cure. The 1 YRS,3 YRS,5 YRS of the subgroup A were 76.5,%,33,3%and 19.6%respectively,with the median live time of 23 months,73.1%,25.0%and 11.5%for the subgroup B with the median live time of 24 months. The result of Kaplan-Meier Log rank test showed no significant difference between the prognosis of subgroup A and B.ConclusionsThe mucinous gastric carcinoma with the mucin pools A or B possesses the homoeonomous clinicopathologic characteristic, and the mucin pools with different appearance did not cause the significant difference in prognoasis.
