Ibuprofen For Control Pain After Orthodontic Separator Plaecment

Introduction: The control of pain during orthodontic treatment is important to both clinians and patients. However,there is no standard of care for controlling this discomfort. The objection of this randomized , double-blind clinical trial was to research the effectiveness of Ibuprofen therapy for orthodontic pain afer separator plaecment.Methods: Sixty-four orthodontic patients who were to undergo separator placement were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 4groups taking different ibuprofen doses or lactose. The patients recorded their discomfort on a 100-mm visual analog scale and selected words adapted from the McGill Pain Questionnarire at 7 time intervals when"teeth not touching" or when "teeth touching".Results:1. Pain increased immediately after separator placement , lessend , and then increased to a peak the next morning.2. Preemptive ibuprofen therapy significicantly decreased pain that was experienced 2 hours after separator placement.3. The patients who had taken preemptive and single-postoperative ibuprofen doses have significicant lower pain scores compared with lactose group at bedtime.4. At the next morning and 24 hours later, the patients who had taken preemptive and double-postoperative ibuprofen doses have significicant lower pain scores compared with lactose group.5. The pain scores were all lower when"teeth not touching"than when "teeth touching".6. The most commonly selected words to describe pain were "sore""annoying"and "tight".In 3 doses group ,"heavy""unbearable"were rarely selected.Conclusion:1. orthodontic separator placement can cause discomfort and pain in a few times,especially when teeth touching.2. Ibuprofen can decrease the pain after separator placement ,muti-doses group is more effective than single-doses group.
