Objective: To investigate the change of the plasma levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and type 2 diabetics(T2DM) and patients with CHD and impaired glucose tolerance(IGT) after glucose load, and to explore its clinical implications. Methods: 100 subjects were enrolled in the study. All the subjects received simple oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT), and according to the plasma glucose, were devided into four groups: 25 patients with CHD and T2DM (CHD+T2DM group), 25 patients with CHD and IGT (CHD+IGT group), 25 patients with CHD and normal glucose tolerance (CHD+NGT group), and 25 healthy subjects were assigned as normal control (NC group). For all the subjects, plasma glucose and plasma levels of PAI-1 were observed at the time of fasting (TO) and after glucose load 2 hours (T120). At the fasting, some others clinical and biochemical datas were also observed, such as blood pressure, body mass index(BMI), and serum lipids. Results: (1) Compared with the CHD+IGT group, CHD+NGT group and NC group, at the fasting, the plasma levels of PAI-1 and plasma glucose in the CHD+T2DM group elevated significantly(P<0.05), and the three groups of CHD+IGT group, CHD+NGT group and NC group had no significantly changing(P>0.05); (2) At the glucose load 2 hours, compared with the CHD+NGT group and NC group, the plasma levels of PAI-1 and plasma glucose in CHD+T2DM group and CHD+IGT group elevated significantly (P<0.05 ); (3) Correlation analysis demonstrated that the plasma levels of PAI-1 were positively correlated with plasma glucose(r = 0.891).Conclusions: (1) At the fasting, the plasma levels of PAI-1 and plasma glucose in the CHD+T2DM group elevated significantly; (2) At the glucose load 2 hours, the plasma levels of PAI-1 and plasma glucose in CHD+T2DM group and CHD+IGT group elevated significantly, and the plasma levels of PAI-1 were positively correlated with plasma glucose.
