Objective To assess bone mineral density in adult epileptic who have been treated with carbamazepine, and analysis of the factors on the relevance of changes in bone mineral density. Methods 32 adult epileptics who had only been treated with carbamazepine more than 6 months and 30 healthy adults were evaluated for bone mineral density, and measure the concentration of calcium, phosphorus concentration, drug concentration and total alkaline of patients. Results The epilepsy group Z value of bone mineral density is lower than normal control group significantly(P=0.014), which the reduce level of L1 Z value is same L2-L4's, because the discrepancy of L1 Z value and L2-L4 average Z value is no difference between two group (P=0.25). To ananlysis the relationship between age, medication time, blood drug concentration, duration, weight, gender and the Z value of patients'lumbar spine bone mineral density, there are only weight and gender relate with Z value. The Z value of Lumbar spine bone mineral density in patients was positively correlated with body weight (B = 0.04, P = 0.01). Women assigned to -1, men assigned to 1, the relations between bone mineral density Z values and gender is (B =- 0.49, P = 0.003), that is positively correlated with the women, and men into a negative correlationConclusion Taking carbamazepine can cause reduced bone mineral density in adult patients with epilepsy, premenopausal women were affected less Slightly than men by carbamazepine, the weight is a protective factor...
