The southern part of Shannxi is rich in resources of water and herbs which lays a foundation for the development of traditional Chinese medicine production. This area, a treasure-house of various herbs, has long history of planting herbs and herbal medicine production. Shannxi provincial government and governments at grass root have helped to promote the planting of the herbs as well as production of traditional medicine with various means of regulations, yet the herbal diversity of this area is far from being recognized and there are still potentials for the development of traditional medicine production so as to make this area a base of production. This thesis suggests that efforts should be made to dig out the historical and cultural value of the traditional herbs and research should be done on the locations of the precious species. The traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology are the gem of our country, which is full of our national features and the regional features. The classic medicines books, ranging from as early as in Tang Dynasty, Song Dynasty to the contemporary, all contain a record of the herbs in this area. A research on the record of herbs in this area in the classic Chinese medicine books will bring out the cultural and historical value of them and promote Southern Shaanxi medicine culture so as to make this are a well-known base of planting and production. This thesis studies the growing locations of herbs as recorded in Compendium of Materia Medica in this area so as to probe into the cultural and historical value of some herbs in this area.
