Objective To investigate the clinical effect of green light photoselective vaporization of prostate (PVP) for huge benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).Methods From Dec 2005 to Jul 2007, 36 patients with huge BPH. The mean patient age was 72.5years(range, 59~92years). The mean weight was 136.8g (range, 100~275g). The operative time, estimated blood loss, complications, postoperative hospital stay, catheterization time, IPSS, QOL was record. Results The operation was successfully performed in all the 36 patients. The mean operative time was 192.8min(range,55~365min). The mean estimated blood loss was 22.8ml(range,5~300) and no blood transfusion or conversion to an open procedure was required. The mean hospital stay was 14.7d(range,7~45d) and no complication occurred. The mean catheterization time was 6.3d(range,4~10d). The mean IPSS was 21.7(range,5~35). The mean QOL was 4.3(range,1~6). During a follow-up of 1~21 month, no BPH recurrence was found. Conclusions PVP for huge BPH can be performed safely and effectively. Extended follow-up period is required to determine its long-term effect.
