ObjectiveTo study the relationship between age and the clinical characteristics of bladder carcinoma in adult patients.MethodsThe clinical data of 247 adult patients with bladder carcinoma was retrospectively reviewed,According to their age,the patients were classified into 3 groups:<40 years group,40-60 years group and>60 years group. The gender ratio, haematuria, clinical stages, pathological grades and appearance, number, progression of the 3 groups were compared to determine the relationship between age and the clinical characteristics of bladder carcinoma in adult patients.ResultsThe male/female ratio in the six age group was as follows:5.5:1 in<40 years group,4.6:1 in 40~49 years group,3.8:1 in 50~59 years group,4.3:1 in 60~69 years group,3.9:1 in 70~79 years group and 3.5:1 in≥80 years group. There was no significant difference in the male/female ratio among the 6 groups.Haematuria also was the frequent symptom. The percentage of haematuria in<40 years group was lower than that in other groups, but there was no significant difference among 6 groups(P>0.05).The<40 years group had a higher percentage(15.4%) of incidental tumor compared with those in the other 5 groups, and among which statistically significant difference was found(P=0.033).At the factor of tumor numbers, the percentage of multiple tumors in 6 groups is:7.8%vs 25.6%vs 38.6%vs 35.3%vs 47.7%vs 55.6%.There was significant difference between the 6 groups(P=0.015). The percentage of invasive tumor increased with the increasing age(7.8%vs 30.8% vs 45.6%vs 49.4%vs 50.0%vs 66.7%),there were significant difference appeared (P=0.021).There were no significant differences when the pathologic grades were compared among the 6 groups(P>0.05).ConclusionsThere is close relationship between age and the clinical characteristics of bladder carcinoma in adult patients, which leads to different clinical features in different age groups. Those characteristics have significant meanings to treatment and prognosis.
