The Study Of Correlation Between Nurses' Stigma Toward PLWHA And Nurse Caring Behaviors

Objective:To investigate the level and relationship of nurse's stigma toward PLWHA and nurse caring behaviors in Changsha;and provide preliminary measures against nurse's stigma toward PLWHA.Methods:619 nurses in hospital of Changsha attend our investigation from May 2008 to August 2008 by Stratified cluster random sampling method.The Nurse's Stigma Scale,Nurse Caring Behaviors Scale and Individual Information Sheet were used in our investigation.Theinternal consistency of Nurse's Stigma Scale was examined and res-ulted in Cronbach's a 0.88.The content validity index of the scale was 0.81. Descriptive analysis,Spearman correlation and multiple linear stepwise regression were performed by SPSS13.0.Results1.650 nurses agreed to fill the questionnaires and 619 effective copies were obtained,creating a response rate of 95.2%.2.The internal consistency of Nurse Caring Behaviors Scale was examined and resulted in Cronbach's a 0.88,and the content validity index of the scale was 0.81.3.The mean score of the Nurse's Stigma Scale was 50.32±7.78, and the scores of Nurse's Stigma among 5 dimensions were ranked at a descending order as followed:Prejudiced Attitudes(3.81±0.69), Fear of PLWHA(3.37±0.84),Opinion about Health Care for HIV/ AIDS Patient(2.85±0.82),Internalized Shame(2.68±0.76),Discrimination Intent at Work(2.43±0.70).4.The scores of Nurse Caring Behaviors Scale were ranked at a descending order as followed:patient education(3.58±0.55),patient assessment (3.38.±0.50),technical test and assessment(3.22±0.55),general nursing care(3.20±0.58).5.There was a negative relationship between the nurse's stigma and nurse caring behaviors,nurse's stigma were explained by 35.9% with Fear of PLWHA,Opinion about Health Care for HIV/AIDS Patient,Internalized Shame,Discrimination Intent at Work,and Discrimination Intent at Work played the most important role.Conclusions:Nurse's stigma toward PLWHA was at a medium level,to reduce the level of nurse's stigma toward PLWHA,will help improve the quality of nursing service.
