Background and Objective:To evaluate the value of enhanced chemi-luminescence assay in the detection of serum thymidine kinase 1 in patients with carcinoma of nasopharynx. Methods:The levels of serum TK1 in 30 patients with carcinoma of nasopharynx before treatment and after treatment,15 with Nasopharyngitis and 15 normal controls were determined by enhanced chemi-luminescence assay. The EBV-IgA-VCA titer in sera of the 60 patients were detected by immunoenzymatic(IE) method.Results:1 The levels of sTK1 in patients with carcinoma of nasopharynx 2.71(0.96-8.41)pmol/L were much higher than those in patients with nasopharyngitis 0.82(0.08-3.48)pmol/L and normal controls 0.65(0.22-4.58)pmol/L(P<0.01),but there was no significant difference between patients with nasopharyngitis and normal controls(P>0.05). 2 The levels of sTK1 in patients with carcinoma of nasopharynx were not correlated with tumor stage or lymph node metastasis.3 The levels of sTK1 declined significantly after treatment.4 The positive rate of sTK1 in patients with carcinoma of nasopharynx(76.7%)was similar to VCA-IgA(83.3%).The positive rate of sTK1 in patients with carcinoma of nasopharynx after treatment(33.3%)was much lower than the VCA-IgA positive rate(76.7%). Conclusion:The detection of sTK1 may have value in the diagnosis of carcinoma of nasopharynx. There is no difference between the detection of sTK1 and VCA-IgA in the diagnosis of carcinoma of nasopharynx,But the detection of sTK1 may be more sensitive than VCA-IgA in the monitoring of carcinoma of nasopharynx.
