| Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of a self-etching primer on shear bond strengths(SBS) within 1 hours,and provide evidence for clinical practice.Methods:200 extracted human maxillary premolars for orthodontic treat were collected and divided randomly into 20 groups(10 each ).Brackets were bonded by self-etching primer(TPSEP;Transbond Plus Self Etching Primer) combineded with light-cured adhesive paste(Transbond XT) or resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI,Fuji Ortho Lc glass ionomer cement).The SBS was tested at 5min,15min, 30min,60min and 24h.Evaluated the ARI by observing the surface of the teeth after debonding.Any statistically significant differences in these variables were analysed by factorial analysis.Results:(1) The highest SBS was obtained at 24 hours in all guoups while the lowest one was at 5 min in the groups of self-etching primer with the resin-modified glass ionomer and 35%phosphoric acid with the resin-modified glass ionomer.(2) The SBS was approximate at 5,15,30 and 60minutes but significantly higher at 24h when the light-cure adhesive coupled with self-etching primer or 35%phosphoric.(3) The SBS of the group of self-etching primer with resin-modified glass ionomer and 35%phosphoric acid with the resin-modified glass ionomer was lowest at 5 min and highest at 24h and approximate at 15,30 and 60min.(4)There was no significant difference of ARI in all groups.Conclusion:(1) The SBS of bonding with the use of the self-etching primer was similar to the conventional method during the first hour and at 24h.(2) Clinically adequate SBS was obtained at 5min when brackets were bonded by the self-etching primer combined with light-cure adhesive,and the SBS during 1h was lower than 24h.(3)The SBS of self-etching primer with resin-modified glass ionomer at 5min was too low to be clinically accepted but significantly improved after 15min,and the SBS during 1h was significantly lower than 24h.
