Objective: To realize the clinical characteristics' difference of male and female patients with obstructive sleep apnea—hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) by epidemiological investigation and polysomnography study.Method:143 male patients and 35 female patients with OSAHS diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG) were selected, who were admitted to our hospital from June 2006 to July 2008 .The clinical presentations and the resluts of PSG monitoring were analyzed between the two group.Result:The mean age of female patients was 52.6±9.18 years old, and that of male patients was 45.2±12.3 , the difference was considered significant (P<0.05).The mean body mass index (BMI) of female patients was 25.6±4.6, that of male patients was 26.9±3.2, The difference of the BMI is significant (P<0.05). The mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of female patients was 27.2±21.8 , and that of male patients was 40.1±22.8 ,t he difference was considered significant (P<0.05).The mean arterial oxygen saturation (MSaO2) of female patients was 82.5±5.0, that of male patients was 79.4±6.3, The difference of the MSaO2 is significant (P<0.05) . The longest oxygen-reduction period of female patients was 57.6±10.6, and that of male patients was 64.0±15.3, the difference was considered significant (P<0.05).Conclusion:Female patients with OSAHS are older than male patients, the mean AHI and the longest oxygen-reduction period of female patients is lower than that of male patients, but the MSaO2 of female patients is higher than that of male patients.Female OSAHS patients are older and lighter than male patient,Gender disparity should be taken into account in current clinical evaluation.More attention should be paid to the diagnosis and treatment of OSAHS in female patients.
