Objective: To evaluate test turnaround times (TAT)of emergency specimens in our laboratory to find out the factors that influence TAT, and to optimize workflow and shorten TAT.Methods: Gain information about sample receipt time and result verification time of 08.1-11and 09.1-4 from the Laboratory Information System (LIS),then calculate and analyze. Useχ2 test for 2×2 tables to compare the difference between modified measures implemented before and after. Results: The fraction defective of emergency blood routine test for 08 and 09 is 19.18% and 9.12% respectively, biochemistry test is 9.72% and 6.16% respectively, coagulogram is 24.12% and 18.03% respectively . The modified measures implemented in emergency department (ED) was able to significantly improve TAT.Conclusion: The delay of TAT on emergency specimens for blood routine test, biochemistry test and coagulogram was noted in 6-8:00am, 10-12:00am and 8-10:00am respectively. The reasons that prolonged TAT were as follows: complicated test items , slow running rate of the machine, machine breakdown , deficiency of staff in the peak time, insufficient responsibility of the staff and overlook of the staff during shift change (e.g. night shift to morning shift),et al.
