Objective:1.To discuss the correlation between the syndrome types of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and the course of diabetes mellitus in gerontal patients;2.To discuss the correlation between the chronic complications of diabetes mellitus and the syndrome types and Western medicine target of TCM in gerontal patients. Methods:By using questionnaire forms, aged patients of diabetes mellitus who meet the criterion were surveyed at the outpatient clinic,Department of Endocrinology,Xiamen First Hospital. The general and clinic conditions, syndrome types of TCM,and related experimental examinations including blood fat, blood glucose, blood pressure, glycosylated hemoglobin, diabetic ocular fundus examination and Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test, were investigated.Results:1.Analysis on distribution of syndrome types in 49 patients of gerontal diabetes with duration of less than 5 years showed that, the following syndrome types commonly presented: blood stasis in 33(67.3%),heart deficiency in 20(40.9%),qi deficiency in 18(36.7%),liver deficiency in 16(32.6%) and kidney deficiency in 15(30.6%).In 41 patients with duration of more than 10 years, the common syndrome types were:blood stasis in 23(56.1%),qi deficiency in 22(53.7%),heart deficiency in 20(48.8%),liver deficiency in 18(43.9%), dryness-heat in 15(36.6%) and qi stagnation in 15(36.6%).2.There are statistical differences in syndrome types of qi deficiency,dryness-heat and qi stagnation between groups of patients with duration of more than 10 years and less than 5 years (P values were 0.016,0.046 and 0.02,respectively).3.The comparison of Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test positive and negtive groups showed marked difference in liver deficiency syndrome type(P=0.028). 4.The result of ocular fundus examination in gerontal diabetic patients manifested significant correlation between diabetic retinopathy and course of disease(r=0.942).Conclusion:1.Blood stasis is commom in the process gerontal diabetes.Syndrome types of qi deficiency,dryness-heat and qi stagnation increase in the patients with duration of more than 10 years.2.Liver deficiency syndrome type is higher in Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test positive group than negtive group, suggesting that Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test may serve as a reference indicator for liver deficiency syndrome type of TCM.3.The result of ocular fundus examination indicates that diabetic retinopathy correlates with the course of disease.
