ObjectiveIn our study,we planed to investigate effects of phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome ten(PTEN) and ras-p21 protein in the development and proliferation of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) by comparing the difference of their express level in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and normal esophageal mucous membrane.MethodsS-P immumohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression of PTEN and ras-p21 protein in 60 cases of ESCC and normal esophageal tissues closely adjacent to carcinoma.SPSS 13.0 was used for statistical analysis.ResultThe incidence of PTEN in ESCC was 83.33%while in normal esophageal mucous membrane it was 100%.There was significant difference between two groups(p<0.01).The expression rates of PTEN in highly,moderately and poorly differentiated ESCC groups were 92.86%,80%and 75%,respectively.There was no significant difference between three groups(p>0.05).The expression rates of PTEN in cases with lymph node metastasis and no lymph node metastasis were 78.79%and 88.89%,respectively.There was no significant difference between two groups(p>0.05). The expression rates of PTEN was not related with tumor infiltration depth(p>0.05). The incidence of ras-p21 protein in ESCC was 80%while in normal esophageal mucous membrane it was 3.33%.There was significant difference between two groups(p<0.01).The expression rates of ras-p21 protein in highly,moderately and poorly differentiated ESCC groups were 71.43%,75%and 100%,respectively.There was no significant difference between three groups(p>0.05).The expression rates of ras-p21 protein in cases with lymph node metastasis and no lymph node metastasis were 75.76%and 85.19%,respectively.There was no significant difference between two groups(p>0.05).The expression rates of ras-p21 protein was not related with tumor infiltration depth(p>0.05).The expression of PTEN was inversely correlated with the expression of ras-p21 protein(r=-0.500,p=0.01).Conclusion(1) The expression rates of PTEN in ESCC was lower than in normal esophageal tissues closely adjacent to carcinoma.The expression rates of PTEN was not related with degree of differentiation of carcinoma,lymph node metastasis and tumor infiltration depth.(2) The expression rates of ras-p21 protein in ESCC were higher than in normal esophageal tissues closely adjacent to carcinoma.The expression rates of ras-p21 protein was not related with degree of differentiation of carcinoma,lymph node metastasis and tumor infiltration depth.(3) The expression of PTEN was inversely correlated with the expression of ras-p21 protein.
