Japan is China's neighbors.Since ancient times,Japan had accepted Chinese medicine directly or indirectly.At first this study was imitation, over a long period of continuous practising,summarizing and improving, Japanese medicine gradually formed its own unique characteristic.Japan is an island country,separated from China by the sea,it is a little difficult to contact with each other,so the reception of Chinese medicine in Japan mainly depended on books,through the process of directly importing the Chinese Medical Books and learning,inscribing the Chinese Medical Books,then annotating the Chinese Medical Books,and final writing the Medical Books,furthermore researching,utilizing and elaborating on Chinese medicine."Compendium of Materia Medica" transmitting to Japan and its impacts were the most representative of this process of reception, and were particularly phenomenons in the Edo period(1603-1868). Therefore,if someone want to understanding how the dissemination of Chinese medicine in Japan and its impacts,researching on reception of the "Compendium of Materia Medica" in the Edo period of Japan's tradition would be an effective way after all,this is my exactly purpose what I choose the title to the research on inheritance and influence of the "Compendium of Materia Medica" in the Edo period of Japanese. The history of the Edo period is a link between past and future of Japanese culture,also is the development at its peak of herbal medicine. Throughout the development of herbal medicine in the Edo period,many scholars,high academic standards and many research results in this historical period appeared because of the effects of "Compendium of Materia Medica".All those had reached an unprecedented level.In the context of the "Compendium of Materia Medica" transmitting to Japan, Japanese herbal medicine accomplished a transform that gradually formed its characteristic after simple imitation of China,established the Japanese herbal medicine on its own style.From the original introduction,inscribing "Compendium of Materia Medica",to receiving,researching,elaborating and utilizing of the book,Japanese herbal medicine gradually explored its own path in such way.This paper mainly contains three parts that are dissemination of the "Compendium of Materia Medica" in Japan,Japanese medical scholars who studied the "Compendium of Materia Medica" and main Japanese works which researching and utilizing of "Compendium of Materia Medica".In order to systematically introducing history of transmiting, inscribing,learning,researching,utilizing of "Compendium of Materia Medica" in the Edo period of Japan,then this paper analysed the impacts on Japanese herbal medicine in the Edo period after "Compendium of Materia Medica" transmitting into Japan.Heritage of "Compendium of Materia Medica" in the Edo period of Japanese had a profound impact on the development of Japanese herbal medicine.From contains of research to methods and direction,it were permeated with "Compendium of Materia Medica" of academic thought and spirit.First of all,the "Compendium of Materia Medica" impacted research's content of the Japanese herbal medicine.Through learning "Compendium of Materia Medica",combining with their national conditions,Japan doctors paid attention to learn knowledge that is the related to drug names, characters,collection,distinguish,identification,efficacy and toxicity as well in the "Compendium of Materia Medica",its reflected that they emphasized on the practical side.Secondly,the "Compendium of Materia Medica" impacted study approach.Infected by the Li Shizheng's spirit of practical learning, Japanese doctors also called for visiting on-site and observing by themselves to researching drug.Third,the "Compendium of Materia Medica" research direction.The book contained much knowledge of botany,pharmacology,pharmaceutics, clinical therapy and so on.In the early Edo period,the Japanese herbal medicine received much knowledge of the book.In the late Edo,they were still impacted by western ideas and research methods,then moved towards direction of the natural history,thus Japanese herbal medicine embarked on their own learning path.In short,the "Compendium of Materia Medica" were brought to Japan, and it contained a wide range of knowledge systems,thought of emphasizing on the practice were transmitted in the Edo period.These results laid the foundation of the Japanese herbal medicine in this time,and impacted the development of herbal medicine in the Edo period at different aspects from start to finish until the eve of the Meiji Restoration.
