AimThis study aimed to evaluate the results of 124 cases hepatic metastasis with radiofrequency ablation treatment.Materials and MethodsWe did a analysis in 124 patients treated with radiofrequency ablation for hepatic metastasis, the primary tumor included colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, gallbladder cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, lung cancer,et al. Radiofrequency ablation was performed under local anesthesia with percutaneous way or general anesthesia with intra-operation way, using ultrasound guidance.Radionics Cool-Tip RF System was used to deliver the treatment.ResultsThe mean age of patients treated was 59.1 years. There were 76 male and 48 female patients. The follow-up time was ranged from 1 month to 5 years. The hepatic metastasis was due to 15 different kinds of primary tumor, the mean metastatic tumor size ablated was 2.6 cm(0.5~11cm).The post-RFA concentration of the tumor marker was decreased. The uncomfortableness which patients felt during the procedure included pain, nausea, chest distress and dyspnea, arm soreness.Rupture and bleeding of the metastasis and the residual lesion due to uncomplete ablation were the two most common complications.A total of 35 cases needed re-do radiofrequency ablation because of recurrence. The mean survival time is 15.29 months.ConclusionsRadiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive treatment modality of hepatic metastatic tumor. It can be useful in a select group of patient with solitary liver metastasis from different primary cancer.
