Background:Reconstruction of the acetabular deficiency is technically in revision surgery. This retrospective study aimed investigating the short-term outcomes after reconstruction with the reinforcement ring.Patients and methods:Between 2004 and 2008,20 reconstructions of the acetabulum with the reinforcement ring in total hip revision were performed. The mean age is 66.9 years(range,48 - 84 years).Average follow-up was 1.7 years(range,1 - 5 years). According to the Gross classification, twelve acetabular defects were Typeâ… ,three were Typeâ…¡A,and five were Typeâ…¡B.Result:No patient needed further revision. The mean Harris hip score is 81.6(range, 60 - 95 ).The pain were significant relieved. Some complications were documented during the follow-up.Twelve patients had postoperative limping, one patient had recurrent' dislocation. No radiolucent line was found between the prosthesis-bone interface and the prosthesis-cement interface. The allograft had entire or partial intergration, none had been absorbed. Conclusion:The acetabular reinforcement ring is a viable option for severe acetabular defects in revision hip surgery. It shows satisfying both clinical and radiographic results in short-term.Measure the acetabular deficiency before surgery and choose the appropriate prosthesis is important.Surgeons should put the ring at the right position.Assured bone support of the prosthesis is the most important thing for initial stabilization.
