Purpose:To assess the clinical outcomes in patients who underwent peripheral lamellar or penetrating keratoscleroplasty with frozen preserved donor for limbal dermoids. Methods:This was a retrospective study of 12 patients(12 eyes)treated by peripheral lamellar keratoscleroplasty and 1 patient(1 eye)treated by peripheral penetrating keratoscleroplasty between 1998 and 2008 in S.R.R.S Hospital. We evaluated the surgical outcomes by observing the complications of surgery, cosmetic outcomes and visual acuity. The patients whose preoperative visual acuity were lower than 0.8 were classified as Group one and others were Croup two.We compared the differences between two groups and analyzed the factors contributing to postoperative visual acuity. Results:Of 13 patients,1 patient had secondary fungal infection in graft which were finally cured by antifungal treatment and there was no vascularization in graft and just superficial and interlaminar scars left.No surgical complications were found in other patients. In 12.0±4.8 months follow-up periods,54%of these cases had no vascularization in graft and 46%developed mild vascularization.54%of grafts were proved approximately totally clear with iris texture visible but not legible.Mild opacity was found in 31%with iris texture invisible but iris visible, while dense opacity in 15% with iris invisible.Visual acuity was improved in 30.8%and maintained in 61.5%of all patients. The postoperative visual acuity in Group 1 were lower and the size of tumors and grafts were larger than that in Group 2.There was negative correlation between postoperative visual acuity and the size of tumors and positive correlation between postoperative visual acuity and the size of grafts. There was negative correlation between postoperative visual acuity and the ages in Group 1.Conclusions:Using frozen preserved donor in peripheral lamellar or penetrating keratoscleroplasty for limbal dermoids can achieve good cosmetic results with limited complications and no exacerbation of visual acuity in 92.3%.
