Purpose To compare the difference of urinary and sexual function after anterior resection of rectum between laparoscopic and open operation. Methods From June 2008 to December 2008,90 cases after anterior resection of rectum were divided into two groups prospectively and nonrandomly, and received laparoscopic radical surgery(LS,n=59) and open surgery(OS,n=31).The urinary and sexual function were compared between the two groups. Results The rate of urinary dysfunction after operation was 5.0%(3/59)in LS group, and 12.9%(4/31)in OS group(P>0.05). The rate of total sexual dysfunction after operation was 34.3%(12/35)in LS group, and 26.1%(6/23)in OS group(P>0.05). The rate of male erectile dysfunction after operation was 18.2%(4/22)in LS group, and 23.1%(3/13)in OS group (P>0.05). The rate of male ejaculatory dysfunction after operation was 27.3%(6/22)34.3% in LS group, and 23.1%(3/13)in OS group (P>0.05). The rate of female dysfunction after operation was 37.5%(6/16)in LS group, and 42.8%(3/7) in OS group (P>0.05).Conclusion The variation of the rate of urinary and sexual function after anterior resection of rectum between the two groups achieved no statistical significance. Laparoscopic surgery for anterior resection of rectum is safe and it didn't increase the risk of urinary and sexual dysfunction after operation.
