Objective: To discuss the role of superselective transcatheter artery embolization (STAE) in the treatment of auricular arteriovenous malformations (AVM).Methods: Review the clinical experiences in the therapy of auricular AVM during the past 7 years in our hospital and compare the outcomes of different treatments including isolated operation, isolated STAE and combined therapy. Results: Isolated operation dealed with the problem completely and came out lower recur rate while there might be severe trauma caused by the operation and large amount of bleeding. Isolated ligation had been given up due to the poor late outcome even if it seemed not bad early outcome. Performing operation after STAE had a shorter operation time and extremely decreased amount of blood infusion, not mentioning the clear operation field and less complication. The outcome of isolated STAE might be bettered with the advance in embolism drugs and modified technique, although the early recurrence in such therapy were common recently. Conclusions: STAE is playing more and more important role in the treatment of auricular AVM.
