In recent years , it is advocated that, for the treatment of early gastric cancer,it tends towards less invasive operations, including endoscope, laparoscope, kinds of decreased operations and so on,which can conserve the function of stomach better. It is more standard and rational for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. There are some differences of surgical treatment of gastric cancer in Eastern and Western countries, such as the debate of super-expanded resection.Nevertheless, many consis- tent or similar opinions have been reached, for example, D2 dissection has been considered as a standard operation in asian countries for many years and it is considered as a recommended but not required operation lately. The history, current status and important advances and prospect in surgical treatment for gastric cancer was reviewed in this article.
