Objective:To investigate the expression of heat shock protein 70(HSP70)in the rat hippocampal formation after epileptic seizures of different grades. Methods: PTZ-kindling was used to build epilepsy model. The rats were divided into control group, Grade-â… group, Grade-â…¢group and Grade-â…¤group. With immunohistochemical and histopathological methods , the changes of HSP70 immunoreactivity (IR) postitive cells and the extent of neuronal damage in the hippocampal formation were observed at each stage. Results: In the epileptic rats induced by PTZ-kindling, HSP70-IR positive cells was not detected in the hippocampal formation of control rat and Grade-â… group rat,but the numbers of HSP70-IR positive cells of the Grade-â…¢group and Grade-â…¤group were gradually increased compared with control group (P<0.05). Injured neurons were found in Grade-â…¢group and Grade-â…¤group,especially in Grade-â…¤group,by histopathological examination. Conclusion: In PTZ-kindling epilepsy model,as the increasing of seizure grade, the neuronal damage of the hippocampal formation is gradually aggravated, the expression of HSP70-IR also increases gradually, which suggest that HSP70 expression in the hippocampus positively correlates with the severity of PTZ-elicited seizures.
