Purpose:To investigate the curative effect of acupuncture therapy by enhancing the Governing vessel function in the treatment of senile insomnia.Method:The study used a randomized, control approach to observe the curative effect of using acupuncture by ways of enhancing the Governing Vessel and the using simple acupuncture. The patients were divided into treatment and control groups. The former used the enhancing Governing Vessel method, where the following acupoints were chosen:baihui, shuigou, dazhui, and shenmen. The latter used the commonly used acupuncture technique as per the Acupuncture Texts. After 20 treatments, the quality of sleep was assessed according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI) and Clinical Observation Module by Rhone-Poulenc Company. Moreover, the symptoms of insomnia were observed by a Chinese Medicine syndrome scoring guide.Results:1.The overall effective rates of the two groups were 87.5%and 76.5, respectively, and significantly improved after treatment(p<0.05).The Chinese Medicine syndromes changed significantly after treatment;the treatment group had an effective rate of 76.6%and the control group had and effective rate of 70.5%.The change in the two groups were statistically significant(p<0.05).2.The senile insomniac symptom improved in both groups after treatment. The insomniac scores were significantly lower(p<0.01).However,the before and after scores in the two groups were not significantly different (p>0.05).With respect to the Chinese Medicine syndromes, the scores were significantly lower after treatment in both groups(p<0.01).Before treatment, the scores of the two groups were not significantly different(p>0.05);but after treatment, the scores were significantly better in both groups(p<0.05).3.All symptoms improved significantly after treatment in both groups,as shown in the scores(p<0.05).With respect to the number of times awakened, the woken up state and the quality of sleep, the treatment group had significantly better scores than the control group(p<0.05).As for the Chinese Medicine syndromes, all were significantly improved(p<0.05).The sleeplessness, excessive dreaming and poor memory were significantly better in the treatment group than in the control group(p<0.05).Conclusions:Acupuncture by enhancing the Governing Vessel function is effective in the treatment of senile insomnia.
