Objective:To explore the correlation between the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV) and C-reactive protein(CRP) in patients with abnormal glucose metabolism.And to study the value of detecting baPWV combined with CRP in the development of atherosclerosis in patients with abnormal glucose metabolism compared with carotid artery intima-media thickness(IMT).Methods:90 patients from dept.of cardiology and dept.of endocrine in HuaQiao Hospital from May 2008 to March 2009 were selected and accepted the oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) on the next morning.They were divided into three groups based on the OGTT results:normal glucose tolerance group,impaired glucose tolerance group and type 2 diabetes mellitus group (30 patients each group).All the subjects achieved the test of baPWV,the CRP level of plasma and IMT detected with color Doppler.The basic clinical imformation including gender,age, smoking history,past disease history and so on was recorded.All data had been analyzed by SPSS13.0.Between the two groups were compared by independent samples T test,comparison of the rate by using X~2 test.Any significant difference of baPWV,IMT,CRP was detected with One-way ANOVA.Then Pearson linear correlation analysis was carried out.Patients with abnormal glucose metabolism(including impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes group) were divided into the normal IMT group(IMT<1.0mm) and thickened IMT group(IMT≥1.0mm) and make a comparison of CRP and baPWV between two groups.Results:With the deterioration of abnormal glucose metabolism,carotid artery IMT gradually thickened in normal glucose tolerance group,impaired glucose tolerance group and type 2 diabetes mellitus group,While CRP and baPWV gradually increased.The difference between groups was significant(P<0.05).Bilateral baPWV had the positive linear with IMT,Pearson correlation coefficient of the left R=0.547,the right side of R=0.538.CRP with IMT mean and CRP with baPWV mean were positive linear correlation(R=0.481 and R=0.492 respectively). And CRP,baPWV in abnormal glucose metabolism group with thickened IMT were higher than that in normal IMT group. Conclusions:Change of vascular flexibility begin in the early abnormal glucose metabolism.With the progress of abnormal glucose metabolism,atherosclerosis gradually increase.CRP combined with baPWV can detect the early atherosclerosis in patients with abnormal glucose metabolism, and reflect atherosclerosis to some extent.
