ObjectiveTo determine the utility of using quantitative diffusion isotropy and anisotropy values as an objective means of detection infants who suffered from hypoglycemic encephalopathy(HE) in neonatal period. To study the value of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in the HE.MethodConventional MR images and quantitative diffusiontensor MR images from 26 infants who had clinically diagnosed HE before and 20 normal controls.Apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) and fractional anisotropy(FA) values were calculated in predefined regions in the two groups.Statistics analysis was performed to compare ADC and FA values among the two for each region.ADC maps and color-coded FA maps and two-dimensional color-coded tensor maps were reconstructed to compare the two group.ResultADC and FA values of the two groups were significantly different in regions of intresting(ROIs):Occipital and parietal cortexes, basal nuclei, globus pallidus and splenium of corpus callosum.while FA values were significantly different in the same ROIs except globus pallidus.Compared with controls,HE group have lower mADC and mFA.ADC maps and Tensor Shape maps were sensitive to show abnormal of white matters than conventional MRI images.ConclusionQuantitative diffusion tensor of isotropy and anisotropy value combined with ADC maps and Tensor Shape maps can improve conspicuity than conventional MRI images.
