In recent several years, studies on origin and development of the techniques of pulse examination have received more and more attention.Maijing is the first book about techniques of pulse examination in Chinese history.By using traditional literature, theoretical research methods, combined with calculation, this research investigates the features of pulse conditions in Maijing(volume1-6) comparing with those in Sanzhichan. Meanwhile, the reasons and senses are discussed. From this perspective,it reflects its history staged significance in the development of traditional Chinese medical techniques of pulse examination.1 Collect and classify1.1 Limits:①Only pulse conditions of the CUN spot are collected.②Pulse conditions in all kinds of titles are neglected.③Only concrete pulse conditions are collected.④Normal pulse conditions without specifics are neglected.⑤Pulse conditions existing in answers which are duplicated to questions are neglected.⑥Pulse conditions existing in the explanation of another pulse condition are neglected.1.2 Pulse condition①The translated version of Maijing is consulted for a better understanding of pulse conditions.②Pulse conditions which have no special explanations are acknowledged tacitly as their usual meanings. But if one contains such, then the explanation is used.1.3 Divide①Complex pulse conditions are divided into simplex pulse conditions.②Complex pulse conditions are divided without affecting their original meanings.③Complex pulse conditions whose meanings are not clear will not be divided. 1.4 Denominate①One pulse condition is usually denominated by its modern name.②The original name will be used if the modern name of one pulse condition is more complicated than the original one.③An explanation note in brackets will be used if the original name cannot be easily understood.1.5 Sort out and expressPulse conditions are classified by meaning.1.6 ListAfter collecting and classifying, all pulse conditions together with their frequency are in the list.2 Features of pulse conditions in Maijing comparing with that in Sanzhichan2.1 The proportion of non-basic pulse conditions:The 29 pulse conditions in Chinese Diagnostics are recognized as the basic pulse conditions. The proportion of non-basic pulse conditions in Maijing is 18.361%,while the number is 4.269%in Sanzhichan. So the difference is obvious.2.2 The administrative levels of modifying of pulse conditions:The average number is 0.365 in Maijing, while the number is 0.0837 in Sanzhichan.2.3 The proportion of pulse conditions classified by CUN or GUAN or CHI:The proportion is 18.462%in Maijing, while the number is 4.598%in Sanzhichan.2.4 The proportion of pulse conditions classified by left hand or right hand:The proportion is 4.350%in Maijing, while the number is 1.478%in Sanzhichan.2.5 The proportion of pulse conditions classified by light or heavy pressing:The proportion is 5.159%in Maijing, while the number is 0.164%in Sanzhichan.2.6 The proportion of pulse conditions classified by measurement:The proportion is 11.431%in Maijing, while the number is 1.149%in Sanzhichan. 2.7 The proportion of simplex pulse conditions:Some simplex pulse conditions' proportions in these two books are quite different, namely, the substantive pulse, the large pulse, the even pulse, the rapid pulse, the slippery pulse, the slow pulse and the sunken pulse.3 Reasons and significance of features of pulse conditions in Maijing comparing with that in Sanzhichan3.1 Preconditions:①Both Maijing and Sanzhichan could stand for the techniques of pulse examination in those years;②The writing background of these two books is quite clear;③Editions of these two books are reliable;④The collated and translated versions of Maijing are good enough;⑤The number of characters in Maijing(volumel-6) and Sanzhichan is close;⑥The meanings of pulse conditions in these two books are almost same;⑦The text structure of these two books is quite different.3.2 The proportion of non-basic pulse conditions in Maoijing is much larger than that in Sanzhichan. One major reason should be the standardization of pulse conditions since WANG Shu-he standardized 24 kinds of pulse conditions.Meanwhile, the standardization might be too simple.Another reason might result from the sources of knowledge of Maijing.3.3 The average administrative levels of modifying of pulse conditions in Maijing is much larger than that in Sanzhichan. The inflexibility of pulse conditions in Maijing, might be one reason.Another might be the oversimplification of pulse conditions.3.4 The author of Sanzhichan paid a lot of attention to the even pulse. Thus might have caused it to produce a great impact.3.5 From Maijing to Sanzhichan, the theory of pulse examination developed a lot.The circumstances should be an important reason.3.6 The difference of meanings of pulse conditions between Maijing and Sanzhichan might be one reason too.3.7 More materials are needed for a more detailed analysis. 4 Innovation of this topic:①Only pulse conditions are discussed.②Measurement-based method combined with the literature, theoretical research methods are used.③The research is systematic.
