This article studies the Japanese doctor Yoshimasu Nangai(A.D.1750~1813),one of the Ancient Formula School in the Edo period,systematically expounds his academic origin and ideas,particularly explains the essence of "the Qi-Blood-Water theory ",displays his theory and the clinical experiences.This article also tries to find the research character of Treatise on Febrile Diseases in Japan,and compares with traditional Chinese medicine in order to provide a reference clinical practice in China.1.Brief introductionYoshimasu Nangai studied Treatise on Febrile Diseases,advocated "the Qi-Blood-Water theory" and taught many students in order to make the position of the Ancient Formula School steady.Yoshimasu Nangai wrote many books during his life.2.Academic sourcesThe academic thought of Yoshimasu Nangai came from his father named Yoshimasu Todo,and some famous doctors of his time.3.Basic TheoryYoshimasu Nangai considered the Qi,Blood and Water as the primary substances of human body,which maintained normal vital movement of human body. According to the Yin Yang theory,the Qi belongs to Yang,the Blood and Water belong to Yin.The Blood and Water circle under the impulse of the Qi.Stagnation of the Qi,Blood and Water lead to three kinds of poison,which is the immediate cause of diseases.There are also tremendous differences in the concepts such as the Yin-Yang,the excess and deficiency,the interior and exterior.4.Character of Diagnose and TreatmentYoshimasu Nangai also proposed that the diagnosis of diseases should distinguish primary and secondary symptoms,judge the location of diseases,realize their nature and tendency.In order to diagnose,he checked the abdomen,for example watching the shape of abdomen,inquiring the feeling of abdomen,palpating on the abdomen, listening to the sound from the abdomen.He combined "the Qi-Blood-Water theory" with the abdomen diagnosis.Yoshimasu Nangai considered certain symptom as the standard,treated one symptom with one fixed prescription regardless of diseases.He also used "the Qi-Blood-Water theory" to distinguish the reason of diseases and eliminate the three kinds of poison.This is his core academic thoughts.5.PrescriptionsYoshimasu Nangai rejected traditional herb theory,and divided herbs into three kinds according to the Qi,Blood and Water.By this herb theory,he created new prescriptions based on the prescriptions in Treatise on Febrile Diseases.All these academic contribution of Yoshimasu Nangai has great influence on the present KanPo Medicine.
