Ultrasound Imaging Findings Of Anatomic Of The Sciatic Nerve

Objective:The primary objective is to describe the appearance of the sciatic nerve and its location in relation to adjacent anatomic structures using ultrasound from the horizontal prone position. A secondary objective is to describe correlations between any of the measured variables and the volunteers' sexuality, height or weight.Methods:We described the appearance of the sciatic nerve of 25 volunteers. First, a sector probe (4～7MHz) was used at gluteal to examine the structures of the sciatic nerve, which is just traverse the pirformis. We moved the probe down to infragluteal leavel along with the sciatic nerve. Second, a linear probe (10～15MHz) was used to observe the sciatic nerve, then moved the probe down to popliteal level along the sciatic nerve. We recorded objectively the distence between the sciatic nerve and midline of the spinal and leg. We also recorded the deepth, width and thick of the sciatic nerve. All dataes were statical analysis by SPSS 12.0.Results:The anatomic structure of the sciatic nerve of two legs'is symmetry. The mean width of the sciatic nerve at the gluteal is 1.34±0.24cm～2.14±0.37cm,the mean deepth is 4.60±0.55cm～6.08±0.68cm. The mean width of the sciatic nerve at the leg is 0.84±0.16cm～1.28±0.19cm,the mean deepth is 2.29±0.82cm～3.99±0.41cm. The sciatic nerve is parallel to the midline of the spinal. The two lines'distance is about 9.56±0.61cm～10.05±0.60cm. The sciatic nerve is almost go along the leg's midline. There is no obverse correlation between the anatomic structure of the sciatic nerve and the sexuality, weight and height of volunteers.Conclusions:The sciatic nerve is parallel to the midline of spinal. The distance of the two lines is about 10 cm,and the sciatic nerve is almost go along with the midline of the leg. There is no obverse correlation between the anatomic structure of the sciatic nerve and the age, weight and height of volunteers.
