Research On Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Academic Achievement Of Undergraduate Nursing Students

Objective The purpose of this research was to investigate the personality characteristics of undergraduate nursing students;to probe into difference of personality characteristics between nursing students with good academic achievements and those with bad academic achievements,then to find out nursing students with which personality characteristic have better academic achievements. The study can provide evidence for nursing educators to teach students according to their aptitude and cultivate high-quality nursing talents,and for nursing students to select the suitable learning methods according to their personality characteristics.Methods Cluster Sampling was used in the study to select 327 students of Qingdao University who were from three majors,including Nursing,Environmental Science and Chinese and have finished their major courses already.Cattell's 16 PF Questionnaire was used to collect the data.The academic achievements of 8 core courses of 3 majors were used respectively.All data was analyzed by SPSS 11.5. T-test was used to analyze the personality characteristics of nursing students and Multiple Regression was used to analyze the relationship between academic achievements and personality characteristics.Results:①As for 6 primary personality traits including Warmth,Privateness, Perfectionism,Sensitivity,Vigilance and Self-Reliance,and 2 second-stratum personality factors including Independence and Creativity,there was significant difference between nursing students and Environmental Science,Chinese students(P＜0.05 )②For nursing students,personality charactersitics influencing good academic achievements were Warmth,Rule-consciousness,Social Boldness, Perfectionism(P＜0.05);for nursing students,those influencing good academic achievements were Beasoning and Rule-consciousness(P＜0.05);for Environmental Science students,those influencing good academic achievements were Dominance, Rule-consciousness,Social Boldness,and Sensitivity(P＜0.05).③As for 4 primary personality traits including Warmth,Social Boldness,Perfectionism and Dominance, Emotional Stability,Social Boldness and and 2 second-stratum personality factors including Extraversion and Growth Capability in New Environment,there was significant difference between nursing students with good academic achievements and those with bad achievements(P＜0.05 ) Conclusions①The personality characteristics nursing students had their own specialty.Their personality characteristics shows the tendency of high Warmth,high Privateness,high Perfectionism,low Sensitivity,low Vigilance,low Self-Reliance as well as Independence and lacking of creativity.②Some personality characteristics influenced the student's academic achievements.There were some diferent ones and commen ones which influenced good academic achievements.The common personality charactersitic which influenced good academic achievement in three major studnets was Rule-consciousness.③The personality characteristics of nursing students with good academic achievements and those with bad academic achievements were different.Nursing students with good academic achievements showed the tendency of high Warmth,high Social Boldness,high Perfectionism,Extroversion in character as well as with strong Growth Capability in New Environment.
