| Objective To investigate the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) among the elderly residents aged 70 years and over in Suzhou. Methods We analyzed data on 2552 residents aged 70 years or older from the cross section health survey of Suzhou. Anthropometry data, economic situation, life habits, history of chronic disease and medicine information were collected. Weight, height, blood pressure were measured. The fasting blood sugar , fasting insulin level , HDL-C and TG were detected. MS was defined by IDF-2005. The significance of the application using the diagnostic criteria for MS proposed by IDF-2005 and CDS-2004 was compared. Results The prevalence of MS was 21.8%, with 11.8% and 29.2% in male and female. The prevalence of obesity, high blood TG,low HDL-C,hypertension and high blood sugar were 48.7%, 18.5%, 5.6%, 67.4%, 28.7% respectively. 78.2% male individuals and 90.1% female individuals had one or more components of MS. The ageing-specific prevalence of MS was decreased in female residents. The major relative risk factors of MS were age, sex, BMI, HOMA-IR, family histories of hypertension and diabetes, physical exercise, and income. The concordance rate of both definition (IDF-2005 and CDS-2004) was 85%. The diagnosis rate of MS using the IDF-2005 definition was higher than using CDS-2004 definition(21.8% vs 9.8% p<0.01).Conclusion The prevalence of MS is high in Suzhou elderly residents, especially for the younger aged female person. The diagnosis rate of MS using the IDF-2005 definition was higher than using CDS-2004 definition. |
