The paper made comparative research of five kinds of tortoiseshell,and depicted the result of morphological and histological characters on crude drugs and some physical and chemical properties.Some differences of species and category are detected in their shape and micro-character.As morphological characters,the main distinguishing points are surface color,incision on the edge,size of the shield and shape of the spot on the shield.The microanatomy identification was taken through the distribution,shape and quantity of pigment.Through the comparison of TLC,UV,chemistries such as ash content and extract content,the main chemical composition of the five kinds of tortoiseshells are close to each other.The contrast has carried out on amino acid,calcium content,and phosphatide content.The five kinds of tortoiseshells are comparatively similar.According to the content of amino acid,except Cuora amboinensis(Guenther),the content of Testudo elongate (Blyth),Ocadia sinensis(Gray),Trachemys scripta elegans is higher than Chinemys reevesii(Gray).According to the content of calcium,the content of Cuora amboinensis(Guenther) is higher than Chinemys reevesii(Gray); Testudo elongate(Blyth) is the highest content of the other four.According to the content of phosphatide,Trachemys scripta elegans and Ocadia sinensis (Gray)is higher than Chinemys reevesii(Gray);Cuora amboinensis(Guenther) is lowest of the other four.The results shows that the four kinds of tortoiseshell have the similar chemical material for medicinal use.Parmacological study was taken in the nourishing Yin.Five kinds of tortoiseshells played similar influence on the Yin deficiency mice.They can improve the trend of body weight reduction of the mice.Except Ocadia sinensis(Gray),the other four can improve the trend of movement frequency of the mice.Except Testudo elongate(Blyth),the other four can improve the durability in the low density of oxygen.No obvious toxicity is detected after mouse ate water extract.The water extract of five tortoiseshells have no toxicity.
