BACKGROUND: Thromboembolism is one of the most serious complications after pacemaker implantation. A few studies showed that thromboembolic events may be associated with some clinical characteristics of patients and may be related to different pace modes.OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of thromboembolic events in the perioperation period of pacemaker implantation.METHODS and RESULTS: Four hundred and six consecutive patients who underwent pacemaker implantation were retrospectively studied. Thromboembolic events were observed in 11 of 406 (2.7%) patients within one week after pacemaker implantation, which including 9 cerebral infarction, 1 pulmonary infarction and 1 renal infarction, 3 of 11 (27.3%) patients with the complication of thromboembolism died. The average age of the 9 patients with cerebral infarction was significantly different with that of the contrast group. Single factor analysis and multivariate logistic analysis showed that thromboembolic events are independently associated with persistent atrial fibrillation (P<0.001, OR=9.8, 95%CI 2.83-34.16). The incidence of thromboembolism after the operation is not significantly different between patients with dual chamber or single chamber pacemaker implantation.CONCLUSIONS: Thromboembolism in the perioperation period of pacemaker implantation was not rare, and was found to have high mortality. Persistent atrial fibrillation is an independent risk factor for thromboembolic events in patients underging pacemaker implantation. The average age of those who developed cerebral infarction in the perioperation period was significantly higher than that of the contrast group.
