Objective: At present there remains nonstandard usage of Chinese patent medicine in clinical use, which seriously affects the curative effect. Prescriptions of Peaceful Benevolent Dispensary is the first pharmacopeia of Chinese patent medicine compiled by the government in history. The compatibility of drugs in the prescriptions is precise, with the characteristic of standardization in drug preparation and application, which exerts great influence thereafter. However, at present there is little systematic study of the usage of the prescriptions recorded in the book. By the analytic study of the forms of preparation and the usage of the prescriptions recorded in the book, the paper aims to find out the application principle of the usage of the Chinese patent medicine, so as to serve as a reference for clinical use and for the research and development of new Chinese medicines. Methods: By adopting literature-adjusting method of investigating sources by classification and sorting of some relative literature, a database of the forms and usage is set up and a statistical analysis is carried out with a view to the research of the relationship between forms, medicine-taking methods, and syndroms or patients'constitution. Conclusion: According to the statistics of the catlog, the book carries 788 pieces of prescription. After excluding duplicated ones, it is held that there are altogether 767 pieces. The forms of preparation are mainly of powder and pills, which take up 96%. The choice of forms depends on diseases and patients'constitution so as to improve their curative effects. The prescriptions taken with warm water have a percentage of 80%, and those taken with hot water 13.7% of all the prescriptions that taking methods mentioned. These two taking methods are usually used to treat typhoid fever and deficiency syndromes. However, some medicines for heat syndrom are also taken with warm water. Only prescriptions containing poisonous components and those of fierce heat are taken with cold water, which takes up 6%. Medicines are generally taken before meals with a percentage of 48% of all prescriptions mentioning taking time, especially when used to treat deficiency syndromes. When diseases lie in Shangjiao, or when medicines are stimulating to stomach, they are generally taken after meals, which takes up 28.6%. There are in the book various medicine-taking media with standardized applications, which is one of the chief characteristics in prescriptions'application. It is held that different medicine-taking media should be appropriately selected according to different diseases, which can improve the curative effect of the prescription and thus should be paid clinical attention.
