Objective: To survey local recurrence, distant metastasis, long-term survival rate and complication of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and to study the relationship between the p53 expression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) and prognosis of the disease via clinical follow-up.Methods: The expression of p53 protein in 84 cases of NPC were examined by the SP immunohistochemical method. All 84 patients with complete clinical and pathiological data ,who were initially treated in our department during June 2001 to August 2002 and were followed up for five years, were randomly selected. Results: The positive rate of p53 proteins was 72.6%(61/84) in 84 cases of NPC .44 patients were died during the 5-year follow-up, among which 37(84.1%)cases were died within 3 years. In total, the 3-year overall survival rate of the patients is 56.0%(47/84),with 46.0% for P53 positive patients(28/61) ,while 82.6%(19/23) for P53 negative ones. Difference of 3-year survival rate between the tow groups was statistically significant(P<0.05). The 5-year overall survival rate of the patients is 47.6%(40/84),with 39.3% (24/61) for P53 positive patients, and 70.0% (16/23) for P53 negative ones by contrast . Difference of 5-year survival rate between the tow groups was also statistically significant(P<0.05). 71cases developed cervical lymph node metastasis among all 84 nasopharyngeal carcinoma(84.5%),the rest were negative for neck metastasis(15.5%)。Transfer rate of cervical lymph nodes was 90.1%(55/61)for P53 positive patients, while that for negative ones was 69.5%(16/23)in contrast, the difference of transfer rate of cervical lymph nodes between the tow groups was statistically significant (P<0.05).71cases developed cervical lymph node metastasis among all 84 nasopharyngeal carcinoma(84.5%),the rest were negative for neck metastasis(15.5%)。Transfer rate of cervical lymph nodes was 90.1%(55/61)for P53 positive patients, while that for negative ones was 69.5%(16/23)in contrast, the difference of transfer rate of cervical lymph nodes between the tow groups was statistically significant (P<0.05).conclusion: The expression of p53 is closely related with the prognosis of NPC and may be considered as molecular markers for prognosis of NPC.
