Objective: To evaluate the clinical effects of sodium hyaluronate in the prevention of the tendon adhesion after flexor tendon surgery. Methods: Twenty-two cases(thirty-five flexor tendons) with flexor tendon injury, who were treated in our hospital and the sodium hyaluronate was used during the operations ,from August 2005 to April 2007 were followed-up obversed.17 male and 5 female; from 15 to 38 years old ,average 24.5 years old; 15 cases 27 tendons were injured in II area, and 7 cases 8 tendons in III area; 18 cases 26 tendons were cut injuries and 4 cases 9 tendons were power saw injuries; the time between the injury and surgery ranged from 0.5 to 4 hours, average 1.7 hours. The other 17 patients with 29 flexor tendons injured in II and III areas were treated with the same methods without using sodium hyaluronate served as controls. All the cases were one - phase repaired emergently, protective function exercises had been done within 24 to 48 hours after operations .Then detected the injured hands with total active movement (TAM) and made comparative analysis. Results: All the patients were followed-up. The duration of follow up ranged from 3 to 6 months, average was 4.2 months. both of the groups had various degrees of swelling and pain, but no obvious differences; all the cuts were primary healings, no infections; the excellent and good rate of the sodium hyaluronate group's TAM was 81.8 %(215.8±13.4)°,and the control group's was 64.7%(199.3±12.3)°,the sodium hyaluronate group's was significantly higher than the control group's .Conclusion: Sodium hyaluronate can safely and effectively prevent and reduce the tendon adhesion, and can significantly accelerate the functional rehabilitation of injured hands after flexor tendon surgery.
