Object:To investigate the relationship between severity of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS) and some of the risk factors.Method:This study included 794 OSAHS patients and 262 controls.Patients that confirmed OSAHS with polysomnography were recruited between October 2006 and October 2007 at the people's Hospital of Shanxi.Controls were randomly selected from individuals who took part in the general health survey conducted by respiration internal medicine in the same hospital during the same time period when the cases were recruited.Cases and controls were personally interviewed using standard questionnaires and carried out 12-hours monitoring with polysomnography.Data were analyzed using the SPSS(version13.0) statistical package.Results:1.1056 individuals were almost all Han people, married people accounted more and most received high school education.2.The Epworth score in cases were significantly higher than controls, while other symptoms except for snore, oppressed awake and sleepiness had no significance in cases and controls.3.Gender(OR,3.865,CI,1.573-16.955) and obesity(OR,6.803,CI,1.240-24.533) were associated with higher risk of OSAHS.4.Male patients had higher risk than female and the portion of male to female was 4.8.The major onset age was between 41-60yr.No statistical significance was found in patients of different OSAHS level.5.Correlation analysis showed that BMI,neck circumference and waist hip rate(WHR) had significant correlation with AHI.Multiple regression analysis identified BMI and WHR as good predictors for the severity of OSAHS.Conclusion:1.Gender and obesity are risk factors of OSAHS.Male and those who were fat had higher risk.2.Age and gender had strong correlations with the severity of OSAHS.3.BMI and WHR might help in OSAHS diagnosis.
