Objective:To observe the efficacy and security of treatment in chronic manganese intoxication with sodium para-aminosalicylic acid(PAS-Na).Methods:Six chronic manganese intoxication patients were separated into two group,3 patients per group, received 6~8 g PAS-Na per day through an intravenous drip infusion for 50 days in one group as one therapeutic course and an other group for 90 days. The six patients' clinical manifestations and laboratory tests were compared between pre-therapy and post-therapy.Results:At the end of PAS-Na treatment, the neurastheria syndrome and tremor of 3 patients in the 50 days treatment group were slightly alleviated, the scores of unified parkinson's disease rating scale(UPDRS)were decreased from 9 to 13,the scores of Mini-Mental State Exam(MMSE)were increased from 1 to 2,the scores of hamilton rating scale for depression(HAMD)were decreased from 1 to 2.The neurastheria syndrome and tremor of 3 patients in the 90 days treatment group were significantly alleviated, the scores of UPDRS were decreased from 12 to 25,the scores of MMSE were increased from 2 to 3,the scores of HAMD were decreased from 3 to 5.The contents of manganese in the whole blood of all patients were decreased, especially in the 90 days group. There were no severely adverse reactions of the drug that occur in all patients. Conclusions:This study suggests that PAS-Na appears to be an effective and safe drug for treatment of chronic manganese intoxication in short period. The therapeutic effect of midrange poisoning is better than that of severe poisoning.Early diagnosis and early treatment brings advantage to the therapy. The therapeutic effect of treatment with 90 days is better than that with 50 days.
