Background and Objective:To investigate the expressions of MUC1/β-catenin in the tissues of the papillary thyroid carcinoma, the nodular goiter and the controls, and to explore the relationship between their expressions and the carcinogenesis and development of the papillary thyroid carcinoma. Background and Methods:The expressions of MUC1 andβ-catenin were detected by immunohistochemical method in 53 cases of malignant thyroid tissues,20 cases of benign thyroid tissues, and 20 cases of normal thyroid tissues,respectively.53 cases of the papillary thyroid carcinoma were divided into subgroups according to the clinical features such as the size of tumor, with metastatic lymph nodes or not,age and sex.The correlations of the expressions of MUC1/β-catenin with the clinical pathological parameters of the papillary thyroid carcinoma were analyzed. Results:The expression of MUC1 in the tissues of the papillary thyroid carcinoma increased significantly(134.5±10.3,gray scale)compared with those of the nodular goiter(101.0±7.2,gray scale)and the controls(99.1±5.6,gray scale)(P<0.05).The positive expression rates of MUC1 in the tissues of the papillary thyroid carcinoma, the nodular goiter and the controls were 56.6%,15%,and 5%,respectively.The positive expression rates ofβ-catenin in the tissues of the papillary thyroid carcinoma, the nodular goiter and the controls were 71.7%,40%,and 20%,respectively and there was a significant difference in its expression rate between the papillary thyroid carcinoma and the other two tissues(P<0.05).The positive expression rates of MUC1 increased significantly in cases with metastatic lymph nodes compared with those of non-metastasis(P<0.05).Besides,the expression of MUC1 increased significantly in cases with tumor size more than 1 cm~2 compared with the others(P<0.05).Binary Logistic regression analysis showed that sex,MUC1 andβ-catenin were related with the papillary thyroid carcinoma(P<0.05).There was a close relation between MUC1 and lymphoid infiltration,β-catenin and sex(P<0.05).Conclusions:There was a significant relation between MUC1 and the clinical features of the papillary thyroid carcinoma, indicating that MUC1 may play a role in the carcinogenesis and development of papillary thyroid carcinoma.Furthermore, the close relationship between MUC1 andβ-catenin indicating that MUC1-β-catenin pathway may be involved in the mechanism of the papillary thyroid carcinoma.
