Euphorbia helioscopia L.,a perennial herbaceous plant of Euphorbia, has been showed to possess antitumor effects in pharmacological and clinical studies. Euphorbia helioscopia L. are used for the treatment of acute tracheitis, nephritis, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, uterine cervix cancer as a folk medicinal herb in many prescriptions. By repeated column chromatography including Silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, PTLC, HPLC and re-crystallization, twenty two compounds were isolated from Euphorbia helioscopia L. and 12 of them were identified by means of chemical methods, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR spectral and ESI-MS analysis. The compounds wereβ-sitosterol(1), Euphornin(2), Euphornin D(3), Euphohelioscopin A(4) ,Quercetin(5), Gallic acid(6),Caffeic acid(7),Ethyl gallate(8),Myrecetin(9) and Hyperoside(10). Compounds Caffeic acid(7),Ethyl gallate(8),Myrecetin(9) were firstly isolated from Euphorbia helioscopia L.. The anticancer effects of the isolated compounds on LA795 cells were also conducted. Gallic acid and Hyperoside showed higher inhibition rate. Moreover, an HPLC-ELSD method for determining Euphornin was established and it will be benefit for the quality control of Euphorbia helioscopia L..Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. is a common TCM. Recently much attention has been paid to the antitumor and antioxidant effects to Glycyrrhiza. In this study, eighteen compounds were isolated from Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch and 5 of them were identified. The compounds wereβ-sitosterol(11),Licoricidin (12),Betulinic acid methyl ester(13) , 5, 7, 4'-trihydroxy-6, 8-diprenylisoflavone (14) ,Glisoflavanone(15). Antitumor activity on LA795 cells and reducing effect in vitro of extracts and isolated compounds were also studied. The results indicated that Licoricidin and 5, 7, 4' - trihydroxy- 6, 8- diprenylisoflavone had higher inhibition and extract of EtOAc possessed stronger antioxidative activity.
