Objective: To investigate the value of radiotherapy for early breast cancer after breast conserving therapy and local recurrence rate ,breast cosmetic outcome ,survival rate and complication .Methods: From January 2000 to September 2007,91cases with early breast cancer received breast conserving therapy and postoperative radio- therapy in our department.Of them ,42 in stage I,28 in stage IIa and 21 in stage IIb . The median age was 45.Among them,49 patients underwent quandrantectomy,32 segmental mastectomy and 10 lumpectomy. Axillary lymph nodes dissection and radical irradiation were performed in all patients.Result: Seventy–eight patients were followed up ,follow-up rate was 85.7%. The median follow-up period was 61 months.Of them, three cases were death ,three distant metastses, one regional failure, two local recurren- ce.The overall survival rates were 100%, 96.6%, 92.7% at 1-year, 3-year, 5-year post-radiotherapy,respectively. The excellent and good cosmetic rates were 94.5%.No radiation-induced pneumonitis or pneumofibrosis was obverved in them except for the upper limb edema in 3 patients. Conclusion: The study suggested that satisfactory local-regional control rate and cosmetic effects can be attained for early breast cancer patients received breast-conserving therapy and radiotherapy.radical radiotherapy after surgery reduced local-regional recurrence ,it ensured both the therapeutic effects and breast cosmetic outcome.
