Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of nasojejunal enteral nutrition with total parenteral nutrition in patients needed nutrition support. Methods 55 patients who received enteral nutrition(EN) by endoscopic placement of nasojejunal tubes were retrospectively investigated to compare the levels of hemoglobin, red blood cell count, lymphocyte count, total serum protein ,serum albumin, serum creatinine, serum cholesterol, serum riglyceride, serum calcium of 66 patients who received total parenteral nutrition(TPN) with the same category of disease before and after nutrition support for 1 weeks,2 weeks,3 weeks,4 weeks. The length of stay in hospital, fasting, stay in ICU, and mechanical ventilation, the cost, the mortality, the infection rate and the incidence of complication were compared, and the incidence of complication of enteral nutrition and its duration were Observed also. Results The levels of lymphocyte count and serum calcium were significant increased in two group(P> 0. 05),but there were no significant difference among the two groups(P> 0. 05);the level of hemoglobin and red blood cell count were increased in EN group, but decreased in TPN group, and there were no significant difference among the two groups(P> 0. 05);There were no significant difference in the levels of total serum protein ,serum albumin, serum creatinine, serum cholesterol, serum riglyceride and serum calcium among the two groups(P> 0. 05); the length of stay in hospital, the length of fasting and the cost in EN group were significantly decreased than those in TPN group(P< 0. 05). The infection rate and the incidence of complication in EN group were significantly depressed than those in TPN group(P< 0. 05).Conclusions Nasojejunal enteral nutrition is more safe in clinical application. Compared with TPN, EN resulted better in control of the infection rate and the incidence of complication, and decreased the the length of stay in hospital, the length of fasting and the cost. Enteral nutrition were more beneficial than total parenteral nutrition.
