Objectives: this study is about the relation of psychological factors with the chronic prostatitis. Chronic prostatitis is often clinically accompanied with psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression and obsession. This study is to investigate whether or not these psychological symptoms can induce chronic prostatitis. Methods: about 90 cases of chronic proststitis were selected from the outpatient department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of TCM. Their somatic symptoms and psychological conditions were investigated and measured with the methods of Symptom checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) and the NIH-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI). The prostate secretions were taken by the method of rectal prostate massage and analyzed under microscopy. All the patients were divided into three groups according to their individual conditions. The group one included 30 cases of chronic prostatitis with symptoms and positive laboratory results. The group two included 30 cases of chronic prostatitis with no symptoms but positive laboratory results. The group three included 30 cases with no symptoms and negative laboratory results. The three groups were analyzed on the differences of SCL-90 scores on all the factors. Results: there are no significant differences in the scores measured by SCL-90 between the group one with symptoms and positive laboratory results and the group two with no symptoms. The later group had less scores and less positive results. But the group three with no symptom and negative laboratory results had significant differences in scores and number of positive results with the other two groups (p<0. 05) and the differences in the factor scores of somatization, anxiety, depression, obsession, hostility and mental disorders are greatly significant (p<0.01).The incidence rates of abnormal or middle ranged abnormal SCL-90 factor scores of psychological symptoms in group one and group two are between 3. 33% and 33.33% much higher than that of group three which is between 3.33% and 13.33%. But the incidence rates of abnormal or middle ranged abnormal factor scores in group one and group two are not significantly different from that of group three (p>0.05). The last result is different from past reports. The possible reason maybe that the sample in the study is not big enough.Conclusion:1 the analyze by investigation scale table show that patients of chronic prostatitis easily appear psychological disorders of anxiety, depression and obsession. The reasons are considered as the chronic long course of the disease and the not good effects of therapy with some patients.2 this study show that patients with psychological disorders of anxiety, depression and obsession are likely to develop chronic prostatitis. So it can be inferred that anxiety, depression and obsession are inducing factors for chronic prostatits.3 the study indicate that the abnormal laboratory results occurs first during the development of chronic prostatitis induced by psychological symptoms of anxiety, depression and obsession.4 this study also indicate that prostatitis patients have somatic symptoms and mental symptoms simultaneously which are also reasons and effects to each other. So in clinic prostatitis must be treated somatically and psychologically simultaneously.
