BackgroundPrimary bronchial lung cancer is one of the commonest malignancy, and its incidence rate and mortality rate are rising in recent years. Lung cancer has already taken the first place of various malignancy in many cities in China. Because there are few specificities in clinical symtoms of lung cancer and the corresponding clinical examination indicators are not sensitive enough, most of the lung cancer patients were in late stage when first visiting, and lost the chance to be cured by surgery.Combined therapy is widely applied at present, which includes radiotherapy, chemotherapy, biotherapy, TCM and support therapy, etc.But the overall beneficial effect was poor. Many reaserch indicated TCM had some advantages in modifying the symptoms and improving life qualities, which provided stability and prolonged long term survival rate.TCM has obtained some effects in treating NSCLC, but it has not established a standardization of TCM syndrome differentiation. The statistical analysis of syndromes, treatments, prescriptions and medicine in literature of treating mid-late stages patients with non-small cell lung cancer is helpful to explore the pattern of TCM.PurposeTo collect published articles of official journals since 1998-2007 in China and process statistical analysis, and explore the pattern of TCM in treating NSCLC.MethodsAdopt frequencies to statistic analyse the literature of TCM in treating NSCLC, and explore the pattern of it. Completely retrieve published articles of TCM in treating NSCLC of official journals since 1998-2007 according to designed retrieval type. Set up database, and adopt frequencies to statistic analyse the data using Excel and Access. Result67 articles were selected in this research, which including 2903 cases involved with NSCLC, 22 syndromes, 42 treatments, 24 ancient prescriptions and over 180 medicines. The syndrome of deficiency of both qi and yin was 42, which was the highest (26. 75%), followed by yin deficiency inner heat, lung and spleen qi deficiency. Supplementing qi and nourishing yin was 38, which was the highest (20. 32%) among the treatments, followed by nourishing yin and clearing heat, clearing away heat and toxic materials. Bulbus lily decoction for strengthening lung was the highest (6/8.11%) among the ancient prescriptions, followed by shashen maidong decoction and pulse-activating powder. Nourishing yin medicine was the highest (251/18. 65%) of all kinds of medicine, followed by clearing heat medicine and supplementing qi medicine, and shashen was the highest(60/4. 46%) of all the medicines, followed by maidong and huangqi. ConclusionHere were the conclusions from the statistical analysis:1. The five most common syndromes of non-small cell lung cancer in TCM were syndrome of deficiency of both qi and yin, syndrome of yin deficiency inner heat, syndrome of lung and spleen qi deficiency, syndrome of qi stagnation and blood stasis and syndrome of phlegm and blood stasis, in which the syndrome of deficiency of both qi and yin was most prominent, persisting through the whole process of lung cancer.2. The most common treatments of NSCLC in TCM were supplementing qi and nourishing yin, nourishing yin and clearing heat, clearing away heat andtoxic materials, decreasing swelling and detoxication, strengthening spleen and replenishing qi,strenthening the Spleen and Eliminating Dampness and dissipating phlegm and removing blood stasis, in which supplementing qi and nourishing yin was the most frequent treatment. So,it is reasonable to treat patients with lung cancer on the basic of supplementing qi and nourishing yin, clearing away heat andtoxic materials, dissipating phlegm and removing blood stasis.3. The most common ancient prescriptions of non-small cell lung cancer in TCM were Bulbus lily decoction for strengthening lung, shashen maidong decoction and pulse-activating powder. the most common Chinese traditional medicines were in the categories of nourishing yin medicine, clearing heat medicine , supplementing qi medicine and relieving cough medicine, in which shashen, maidong, huangqi, bazhu, fuling and baihuasheshecao were the most frequent, reflecting on the basic treating principles of supplementing qi and nourishing yin, clearing away heat andtoxic materials and dissipating phlegm and removing blood stasis in TCM treatments of lung cancer.
