Stomatologic imformatics is constituted by stomatology, computer and information technology, on the other hand, esthetics and orthodontics formed orthodontic esthetics—a new subject of contemporary medicine. Esthetics produce more esthetic request to orthodontics, besides neat teeth alignment, as an important part of personal beauty, beautiful smile has become a significant objective of orthodontic treatment. Therefore, in order to have a good orthodontic treatment result, we should recognize the esthetic characteristics of smile first. Many foreign researchers, such as Sarver DM, Ackerman ,Sabri R , have done much work in this area. They confirmed that smile arch, buccocorridor, gum exposure, and smile symmetry are important factors for smile beauty. Today, smile photo has been essential data for clinical examination, diagnosis, perspective prognosis and estimation. On the purpose of investigating esthetic characteristics more freely and purposely, this study developed a medical image processing software—smile esthetic characteristics measurement system CoSmile MAA 1.0 edition. This system can provide objective proof for investigating smile beauty, and valuable reference for orthodontic diagnosis, treatment plan and investigating treatment results.Method:①to develop a assisted measuring analysis system of smile aesthetical characteristics .The system should have completeness of management and compatibility of functions.②to develop a computer assisted measuring analysis system of smile aesthetical characteristics .③To analysis the smile aesthetical characteristics of young Han people who have normal bite and overbite by this computer programme.The results indicated as the following:①The measuring analysis system of smile aesthetical characteristics was developed. 7 points in rest posture,20 points in smile posture,and then 29 items of smile characteristics were included.②the program was written in Microsoft C 6.0 under the Windows 2000 Professional system.Computer assisted measuring analysis system of smile aesthetical characteristics was developed. The program was proved to have the following advantages : accuracy of measurements , profusion of measuring items ,convenience for clinical use,completeness of management and compatibility of functions.③there were significant differeces between male and female in facial anatomy characteristics;female tend to have high smile,while male usually have medial smile;male with overbite and female with normal bite are proved to have more ideal smile.
